Door Open at 10:00 for social time; meeting will start at 11:15. Lunch starts at noon followed by the featured program.

There is no cost to attend the meeting and it is open to the public.

PROGRAM: Lt. Col. Angelica “Angel” Pilato, USAF (retired) will be the guest speaker at the next Oregon 8th Air Force Historical Society meeting at the Beaverton Elks Lodge on February 11, 2012. Angelica joined the military in 1967 during the Vietnam War. When the war ended for the US in 1972 she was a Captain charge of the “O” Club – Officer’s Club – at Udorn Air Base in Thailand.

She took her collection of stories of her experiences from her years in the Air Force and turned it into a recently published book: “Angel’s Truck Stop, A Woman’s Love, Laughter and Loss during the Vietnam War”.  Angel’s Truck Stop is the nickname given to the officers’ club that Pilato managed at Udorn Air Base, Thailand.

“I was what the fighter jocks called a ‘support puke,’ which put me at the bottom of the military food chain. My job was to run the officers’ club, which provided for the morale and recreation of the officers.”

Angelica lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

About the 8^th AFHS of Oregon

The organization is open to anyone who has an interest in World War II aviation. It is dedicated to preserving and passing on the knowledge of what the people in the Army Air Force units performed in air and ground combat over Europe, the Balkans, North Africa, India, Japan, and in Russia, during the Second World War.

Meetings

Meetings occur on a quarterly basis. In addition to the program, floor displays, local aviation news, and museum news are discussed at the meeting.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Robert Helmstetler, I am a life member of VFW Post 922 in Pendleton, and have recently moved to the Portland area.

Integrated Career Transition  Assistance Workshop 

The Yellow Ribbon Reintegration, Joint Transition Assistance Program (JTAP ) and Oregon WorkSource are putting on a work shop for the 1249 Engineer Bn, all service members, spouses and veterans in search for employment.

The course is intended to provide you with the necessary skills and contacts for obtaining employment in today’s competitive employment environment. We will introduce you to some of the most important strategies, to include: assessing individual skills, writing effective resumes and cover letters, proper interviewing techniques and methods for successful job searching. There will be local business leaders there to provide insights on what employers are looking for and how to best prepare yourself for the Interview.

In addition, we honored the memory of Cpl. Matthew Lembke by witnessing the $13,239.24 donation to the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools from the annual Regatta Run. The VFW opens its doors during the Regatta Run and serves breakfast and brunch to the runners and attendees. This year the Post was also a Platinum Sponsor of the Regatta Run.

Santa Claus  (AKA as Men’s Auxiliary President Don Comstock) with Tigard Police Chief Alan Orr telling him what his Department needs for next year.  They are at a Christmas party for 150 children from Community Partners for Affordable Housing. Santa visits military unit family events and needy children over the holidays.

Mask and Mirror Community Theatre consists of over 100 unpaid volunteers dedicated to providing entertainment, recreation and education to the citizens of our two cities. We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support we’ve received, so we’ve decided to celebrate our good fortune by giving back to the communities that have welcomed us.

Throughout the nine performance run of The Green Room, anyone making a reservation and then showing a current unemployment check stub, Oregon Reliacard, or otherwise proving that they are unemployed will receive 2 free tickets to our theatre.

Also, on our opening night of November 4, 2011, tickets with reservations are only $5 with the donation of two cans or boxes of food. This food will be split between food pantries in Tigard and Tualatin.

Please come join us and support the arts in your city. And since we all seem to have friends and family suffering from the current economic situation – bring them along.
